In June of this year, I gave a parent workshop on milestones and building strong verbal skills in the first 3 years. I touched on what to watch and watch out for related to communication and your child’s development.
Since it's such key information for EVERY parent, and the content is what I often go over with parents I work with, I decided to re-tool the information and make it freely available on line.
The first part (which covers the first year of life) is up and ready now. I'll embed it below. Pass it along to anyone with a new baby, or who has questions about their child's communication skills. Stay tuned for more!
A few notes:
Just before writing this post, TheInformedSLP published a fantastic article on what milestones mean and don’t mean, and how they can be helpful (and not). Read it here: What to make of developmental milestones.
In short, they're a tool! I don’t even use “red flag” in my presentation because a child meeting or missing a milestone may tell you something important–or not at all.
Our culture prizes verbal skills above virtually everything (including, recently, reading skills?!) as an indicator of intelligence. And of course it’s just not that simple. Talking is part of communication and just one way we connect to other people and share information.
